So, I reformatted an external 1TB USB hard drive, with the intent of changing the file system from FAT32 to NTFS so that I could transfer files bigger than 3GB onto it. Formatting it succeeded, but now when I attempt to transfer anything onto it it fails, citing an I/O error. I couldn't reformat it back because after the error it kept telling me that it was in use, even though as far as I could see it wasn't. I restarted, and the compture froze before Windows could boot. I unplugged the hard drive and it booted fine. Hooked it back up and tried to reformat one more time, but FAT32 is not an option, only NTFS and exFAT. exFAT fails somewhere in the process and the whole ugly business begins anew.
