This article lists the top ten articles people buy at the supermarkets in New Zealand. I would love to see an American version as well (http://www.stuff.co.nz/4855638a19716.html).
The items are:
1. Coca-Cola 1.5l
2. Wattie's spaghetti 420g
3. Coca-Cola 2.25l
4. QB Nature's Fresh white toast 700g
5. Wattie's baked beans 420g
6. Dole bobby bananas (850g)
7. Tip Top super soft white toast 700g
8. Sprite lemonade 1.5l
9. QB Molenberg original toast 700g
10. Coke Zero 1.5l
So, white bread, canned spaghetti and Coke. Why am I not surprised? And beans and bananas, but let's not mention the bananas in the rest of the article.
The article suggests New Zealanders are "addicted" to unhealthy food. The comments after the article suggest that if milk and wheat bread would occasionally go for 99 cents a litre or a dollar a loaf, people would prefer to purchase those items.
What are your supermarket staples?
Ours are:
Coke
Bread (we usually go a bit more expensive and get a wholegrain one)
Milk
Cheese
Mince (that's ground beef)
Steaks
Frozen pizzas
That's what I'd say I get every time. I get fruits and vegetables when there's something that looks fresh, which is maybe every second grocery store visit, and of course I buy whatever items I need to complete my desired meals, but those are the staples. The milk, cheese, mince and steaks are outrageously expensive, but I get them anyway because I don't want to starve.
