View Full Version : Four-Day work week could save jobs
Restricting staff to a 4-day working week could prevent redundancies, says a Christchurch business leader. (http://www.stuff.co.nz/4827995a19716.html)
Canterbury Employers' Chamber of Commerce chief executive Peter Townsend said employers should find new ways to retain staff until the job market picked up.
Am I the only person here who'd love to have a four-day work week and three weekend days where I could do whatever I want? Damn, that would be awesome.
Of course, I don't have a job, but still, remembering my 5 to 7 day work weeks makes me cringe. This is a good idea.
4 day work weeks, another excuse for people to be lazy.
Pfft, it would relieve a lot of stress.

7 day work weeks?
Come on now. *lol*
Yeah, at the car dealership, plus he expected me to work 11 hours a day. He was a jackass.

...it's not that uncommon. I know people who work upwards of 80 hours a week.
I like the sound of a 4 day week! And Vincent, have you EVER worked a 40 hour week before? If not, you're not really in a position to be calling people who want a 4 day work week 'lazy'.
And I think most people would much rather have a 4 day week than no job, if that's what it came down to.

There are places in the US that are trying this, mostly to save money in facility costs. Seems like a good idea as long as your business is suited to such a schedule.

when i was 13 i had a job at a local supermarket packing vegetables, after i had been working there for a few weeks my indian boss called me into his office and said to me
"why is it that everybody who works here can manage to work longer hours than you?"
I told him it was because i had to go to school and his reply was:
"do not give me excuses, if you can't be a team player i will have to let you go."
so i started working more hours, and not going to school, after several weeks the school rang my mother to say that i had'nt been attending, she found out i was working instead of going to school and made me quit.
the ONLY reason i stopped working is because i was forced to.
my question is this:
If i had stayed there working instead of getting my "Education" would i really be worse off???
I generally prefer to get all of my hours in over four days than five. Considering I can only get 32 hours max a week as part time, I'd rather work four eight hour days than have to split two of the days into four hour days.
Shit, I'd rather work a 12 horu day than a four hour day anyday of the week.
Pun not intended.
of course, but if you're working 12 hours a day you may have less spare time to smoke crack, and the Liberals can't have that, Thats taking away your Freedom!!!!
You can take our lands, but you'll never take our CRACK PIPES!!!1!1!
That was funny.... Because it's true. :D
Yeah, I know.
I never could understand why some people don't want to work. Most people don't like not having anything to do all the time. If you're going to do something, you might as well get paid for it. There's still plenty of time to screw off in your day after you get off work.
I'm not saying I'm against working a 12 hour day. Actually, if I were going to work 40 hours a week, I'd be happy if they were longer shifts on a few days, rather than short shifts every day.
I also understand that some people work 80 hours a week, by choice or because they have to. The issue was this jackass said I was on a "trial," implied that it was a 40 hour work week with some days on and some ways off, then demanded I work the 10 to 11 hour shifts every day of the week.
Because he said he was only giving me $400 a week, he was paying me $5 an hour (minimum wage here is $12, which is as it should be with the cost of living as it is), and then, when I took a day off when he promised me one, he deducted that from my pay. So I made less than $5 an hour. He was a piece of shit. If I was going to work 80 hours a week, I should have been paid for it.
that guy was a fuckwit, i don't think there's anybody who knows the full story that does'nt agree with you.
People still accused me of being "too picky about jobs" after it happened.

Did anything ever happen about that?
No, I didn't have the $70 to file a complaint, so I couldn't file one.

I thought the Salvation Army was going to help you with that?
Is this the guy that you picked the kiwi fruits for or someone else?
Tex, this is the car dealership job.
The kiwifruit job paid properly. I was just physically incapable of doing it.

The guy there said they would help.
We went back the next day and there was this woman there with him, and they both said no.
I gave up because I just couldn't think about it anymore, which is what has happened with so many things in my ilfe that I can't even count them. I worked there for little over a week, so I was looking at a few hundred dollars at most.
It would have saved our lives back then, but my family is helping now, so I don't really care.
